JamaicaTripper Review: This large, sprawling hotel (once the Renaissance Jamaica Grande) has the largest meeting space in Ocho Rios, and hosts many meetings and conventions. Many conventioneers bring along spouses and children, who find plenty of activity. But there are plenty of reasons to stay at Jamaica Grande even if you're on your own.

Downtown Ocho Rios is just a short walk away. A protected beach offers calm, quiet waters for an afternoon swim. The swim-up bar in the pool sits beneath a 26-foot replica of Dunn's River Falls; the resort recently added a lighthouse complete with slides so the pool area is extremely popular.

The resort features two towers of (fairly basic) guest rooms, but our choice would be the cabana rooms, located on the beach. Lower floor rooms step right out onto the sand.

Clientele: Families, couples, single, conventions

Good Choice If:

you're looking for a family-friendly resort with a supervised kids' program
you're attending a conference

Bad Choice If:

you'd like a small, intimate resort
you've got a very short (three-night) getaway; select the Sunset Beach Resort in Montego Bay instead
